Working with the large retail company Croma, Amazon have now launched themselves into the Indian ebook market with a bang.

They have set up an online ebooks store (www.amazon.com/kindlestoreindia) which will be stocked with the normal million or so ebooks for all of India’s reading pleasure.

Further, you will be able to purchase your Kindle ereaders at any of the many Croma Stores around India. So the world of ebooks has finally properly arrived in the sub-continent. Joy unbounded.

What ebooks?

Well, Amazon have taken this all very seriously, so they are offering you ebooks written by a large number of well known Indian authors, writers such as:- Chetan Bhagat, Ashwin Sanghi, Ravinder Singh and Amish Tripathi to name but a few. Obviously this list is far from complete, they will be offering loads of ebooks by other Indian authors too. As well as these writers, they of course will be offering you all the ebooks they sell in the rest of the world once you have purchased your first Kindle ereader, so you will be able to read yourself to a total standstill.

Self-publish your ebooks.

Further, they have now made their in-house ebook publishing service, Kindle Direct Publishing, available as well to Indians, so all you prospective Indian writers can now publish your writing in Kindle ebook format (link to that site below).

As Russ Grandinetti, vice president of Kindle Content, Amazon.com puts it:-

“We are proud to launch this new Kindle store for Indian customers – offering Kindle book purchases in rupees and the ability to buy and read the work of many great Indian authors. In addition, we are excited to work with Croma to make Kindle available at retail outlets across India”.

And Croma MD of Croma puts it like this:-

This product will launch exclusively in all Croma stores across India at an introductory price of 6,999 INR. So now you know. What they have said there is all actually true, not simply normal CEO talk, the Kindle system is a dream to work with, as I can testify. I particularly love the ability to find, buy and start to read a new ebook at 3 in the morning without stirring from my bed. That is what I call luxury!
