I have reviewed loads of super tough covers for ereaders and iPads here over the last few years, but this, the Wrexler Flex One Is a first for me, an ereader that you can actually throw around at almost no risk of breaking it.
Wrexler, a Russian company who make a range of portable devices have had this ereader on the market in Russia for some time now, and have just launched it in America and Europe, and what makes it interesting is that the damn thing is flexible – to a degree at least.
They have used a screen technology developed by LG which is made from a plastic rather than the glass that most ereader screens use, so not only is it flexible, but also very thin as well, making it one of the thinnest ereaders out there at about 4 mm thick. And very light too, obviously, coming in at about 110 grams (3.9 Oz).
As far as I can tell the only advantage to having this screen is that it can be kept in your pocket and thus get bent a little bit as you move around, without cracking. It can also be dropped on the floor from quite a height without breaking or even getting scratched, which I can see could be a real advantage. Those advantages aside, it is not really any better than any other ereader.
However, it does have a remarkably high screen resolution (1024 x 768), which will make for a very pleasant reading experience compared to the more normal 800 x 600 that most ereaders have.
For the rest, it is a very basic ereader, no WiFi or 3G, no touch screen or any other fancy functions, no built in dictionaries or even an on-line ebook store supporting it.
For your pleasure, here is a short video showing the ereader in use…
As you can see from the video, it is a perfectly normal and rather old fashioned ereader in most respects really, and at the price we are told they will ask for it, an extremely expensive one for what you get.. Apparently it will cost about 200 Euros!
Having no WiFi, you will need to use your computer both to charge it and to find and download your ebooks, which is perfectly easy to do, but is still rather primitive by today’s standards.
