eBookAnoid

During 2010  I wrote about the ebook kiosks that Hanvon (A major ereader maker in China) had been placing in railway stations, and pondered as to whether this was the direction that ebook sellers should go.  Since then, there has been almost no development of this idea,. which seems a pity to me.  However, there has just been a move here in Australia on that front.  In my City in fact.  A bookshop here in Brisbane has installed the first of what they tell us will be numerous such ebook kiosks.

Mary Ryan is the name of the shop in question.  This is a small chain of book stores that seem prepared to go to any lengths to get customers into their stores, they are not only book sellers, but cafes, post offices, meeting places and they also hold readings and concerts as well…   And for some time it has been possible to buy ebooks from their website, based on the Book-ish cloud system.

And now you can buy ebooks in their Milton Branch in Brisbane with their own kiosk.

eBook-Kiosk

They have created a sort of digital kiosk based on an iPad in this branch where you can go online and buy any of the ebooks that are available from Book.ish which you can then read online, or download to your computer, smart phone or web based tablet and read there happily.

Actually this is not a service for ereader owners, as no ereader can work with this system, but for those of you with iPads or tablets it is a great idea.  The only pity is that as always, ebooks in Australia cost way too much.

Anyhow, for you Brisbane dwellers, it is a nice idea, and the book store is a friendly pleasant place to go and find your books, be they ebooks or paper ones, so here are its details.

See you there.

  1. Great idea. Just a shame that it’s limited to iPads and tablets.
